Compact, léger et original, le Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 sait se rendre désirable. Mais sa silhouette de poche s’accompagne de compromis que les habitués de la gamme pourraient vite remarquer.

Le nom du nouveau pliant de Samsung entretient une petite confusion. Le véritable héritier du Galaxy Z Fold 7 au format livre s’appelle en effet Z Fold 8 Ultra. Le Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 classique est en réalité un modèle inédit, plus court et plus large, pensé comme un appareil à mi-chemin entre smartphone et tablette, au format dit "passeport".

Des écrans réduits, sans gagner en finesse
Alors que le Galaxy Z Fold 7 offrait un écran 8 pouces à l’intérieur et 6,5 pouces à l’extérieur, le nouveau Fold 8 passe à 7,6 et 5,5 pouces. Fermé, son écran au format 10:16 est si large que l’écriture peut réclamer les deux mains, tandis que le clavier occupe une bonne partie de l’affichage.
En revanche, plus petit ne signifie pas plus fin : il mesure ainsi 9,7 mm d’épaisseur fermé et 4,5 mm ouvert, contre 8,9 et 4,2 mm pour son prédécesseur. Son format lui permet cependant de s’offrir un petit régime, puisqu’il affiche 201 g sur la balance, au lieu de 215 g, et se glisse plus facilement dans une poche. Les fans du traditionnel format livre devront donc se tourner vers le modèle le plus onéreux de la gamme.

Le mode Flex et le zoom passent à la trappe
La charnière du Fold 8 ne peut plus maintenir le terminal entrouvert à 90 degrés. Impossible, donc, de le poser comme un mini-ordinateur pour regarder une vidéo, passer un appel ou utiliser des commandes sur la moitié basse : le mode Flex présent sur l’itération précédente disparaît.
La photo perd aussi en polyvalence. Le Galaxy Z Fold 7 associait un module principal de 200 Mpx, un ultra grand-angle de 12 Mpx et un téléobjectif avec zoom optique x3. Le nouveau modèle se limite à deux modules de 50 Mpx. L’ultra grand-angle gagne en définition sur le papier, mais le zoom dédié est supprimé et le capteur principal affiche moins de pixels.
Quant au S Pen, attention au faux procès : le Fold 8 reste incompatible avec le stylet, mais son devancier l’était déjà. Il ne s’agit donc pas d’un nouveau recul, mais plutôt d’une absence qui se prolonge. Les utilisateurs réguliers, peu nombreux il faut l’admettre, devront malheureusement faire leur deuil.

Des compensations bien réelles
Samsung améliore plusieurs points : la batterie atteint une capacité de 4800 mAh contre 4400 mAh grâce à la technologie silicium-carbone, la charge filaire passe d’une puissance de 25 à 45 W et l’appareil est animé par la nouvelle puce Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. La certification IP48 demeure et la charnière est annoncée pour 500 000 pliages. Le prix de départ baisse même de 100 €, à 1999 €.
Le Galaxy Z Fold 8 n’est donc pas un Fold 7 miniaturisé. Plus nomade et séduisant pour le multimédia, il abandonne de la surface d’écran, de la finesse, du zoom et une fonction emblématique des pliants pour offrir une nouvelle expérience. Un premier format passeport attirant, certes, mais non sans concessions.
